If the first step is admitting there’s a problem then gaining self-awareness is the first step of a 12-step program. Self-awareness isn’t just about understanding what makes you tick, it’s about understanding your needs and desires, too.
The better you know yourself the easier it will be to adapt to the changes that life throws up. Self-awareness plays a large role in philosophy and therapy, with the belief being that collecting data about yourself allows to you take that information and improve who you are as a person.
People often joke about the lack of self-awareness in others, yet fail to see their own issues on the same subject. We could all use a bit more self-awareness, especially when it comes to our needs.
When you learn how to take note of emotions and how you tick, you will be able to better understand why you react as you do to a variety of life’s situations. It’s easier to improve your habits when you know what your habits are. So, this is when experimentation comes in.
It’s okay to question your deeply held assumptions and biases. It’s this step of self-examination that forces you to be honest with yourself and challenge your own beliefs. You may realize that you have strayed from that path and it’s time to act on what you have learned and change your goals in life. Humans are at their best and happiest when they are staying true to their core values.
Productivity Or Self-Awareness
Self-help is nothing without taking the time to understand who you are. For example, we all know people who swear they’re night people. They are the type of people who stayed up all night in their college days to write their papers.
They missed the fact that they were constantly exhausted, churned out terrible work, and felt awful most of the time.
They weren’t self-aware enough to realize that they weren’t really night people, they just liked sounding cool and creative by saying they were.
It is difficult to completely know yourself, and it may be impossible to determine every cognitive bias, however, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and understand your own needs.
- Objective Introspection. It’s difficult to do, but it must be done. As mentioned above it’s important to study your decisions and don’t be afraid to criticize them if you made a mistake, just correct it and do better.
- A Manifesto. The whole idea behind self-awareness is improving yourself and getting to know your needs. Therefore, when you’ve completed the first step you should set your goals out into a manifesto. This will help you push yourself and keep you on track.
- How your memory recalls a specific event can be incredibly different from what actually occurred and that’s because our emotions tend to cloud things. So, keep a journal to be more aware of where issues come from and how you handle them.
- Self-Review. It might be the worst time of the year at work, but it can be a personal benefit for you. Consider what other people might think or say about you if they were asked the questions. It’s important to try to see things from the perspective of others, it offers you a deeper sense of self-awareness in the process.
Self-awareness is not the same as overthinking or even being self-absorbed. Knowing what your needs are and then acting on them is only going to improve your life and who you are as a person. Chances are you have no idea how often you do things that don’t fall in line with your wants, needs, and values.
